El Center for American Progress estima que entre el 20 y el 30% de los hombres homosexuales y la comunidad transgénero abusan de sustancias en comparación con el 9% de la población general.
Las estadísticas de la Administración de Servicios de Salud Mental y Abuso de Sustancias (SAMHSA, por sus siglas en inglés) que se encuentran a continuación comparando a los homosexuales con los heterosexuales son alarmantes:





Tabaco: los hombres gays / transgénero tienen una tasa de consumo de tabaco hasta un 200% mayor que los heterosexuales.

Marihuana: los hombres gays tienen 3.5 veces más probabilidades de consumir marihuana que los hombres heterosexuales.

Anfetaminas: los hombres gays tienen casi 13 veces más probabilidades de usar anfetaminas
Heroína: los hombres homosexuales tienen casi 10 veces más probabilidades de consumir heroína que los heterosexuales

Alcohol: se estima que el 25% de los hombres homosexuales y transexuales consumen alcohol en comparación con el 5-10% de la población general.

Abuso de alcohol: entre el 20 y el 25% de los hombres lesbianos y gays consumen mucho alcohol, en comparación con el 3-10% de la población general.
